Artists' tour
While developing your own skills, it is important to appreciate and be inspired by the works of others. In this gallery, you can view paintings by professional artists who have used watercolours to great effect in many different ways. The following are all contemporary watercolour artists whose work I greatly admire.
Francis Bowyer
The artist Francis Bowyer works in watercolour, oil and mixed media. He is a Member and past President of the Royal Watercolour Society and is a Member of the New English Art Club. He teaches life drawing at the Royal Academy of Art, London and has won many awards for his work.
Shirley Felts
The artist Shirley Felts combines painting with travelling. Many of her watercolours are done in the South American rain forests, where she works directly from the subject, often including birds and animals in her paintings. Shirley loves nature, and uses watercolour to capture the mood and detail of outdoor scenes.
Tim Rose
The watercolours of Tim Rose include landscapes, interiors, houses, cathedrals and other architectural subjects. Each painting starts with a detailed and accurate drawing, which is then built up using cool and warm washes. The artist likes to work directly from the subject, or from sketches done on the spot.
Ian Sidaway
A well-know painter and illustrater, Ian Sidaway works in a wide variety of media, including watercolour, oils, acrylics, pencil and collage. He has written many books on painting and drawing, and did the watercolour demonstrations for Jenny Rodwell’s 'Painting in the Countryside' instruction cards.
